A Family First MP wants to toughen South Australia's body piercing laws to ensure that people under 18 have parental consent.

There are no laws regulating body piercings for children under 18.

SA MP Dennis Hood says 1,000 cases of infections from body piercing have been reported in the past year, proving that the practice is unsafe.

"What this will do is give the power back to the parents and not have it sort of languishing in the hands of the children if you like as the absence of laws at the moment does," he said.
